A Statistical Observation on Anorectal Diseases


Abstract
A clinical and statistical analysis was performed on 1149 cases of anorectal disease which were experienced at the Department of General Surgery, College of Medicine, Seoul National University from Jan. 1963 till Dec. 1972.
The results were as follows:
1. The admission rate was 14.4% of total new patients, and 45.3% of anorectal diseases in
Out Patient Clinic. It shows the tendency of yearly increment since 1969.
2. The peak incidence was in the age group of 30 to 39 years in 29.9%, and 23.7% in the
age group of 20 to 29 years.
3. The sex distribution was 807 in males and 342 in females with a ratio of 2.36: 1; male preponderance was observed.
4. The incidence by month revealed the highest in July, and low in May and June.
5. The most frequent disease was hemorrhoid(42. 9%), and followed by rectal cancer (17. 6%), :anal fissure and fistula (11. 8%).
6. The admission rate of hemorrhoid was 21.7%, and the highest incidence in the age group of 20 to 39 years was noted. Male preponderance was observed with the ratio of 2.5 : 1.
7. The admission rate of hemorrhoid shows tendency of yearly increment since 1969, and the highest incidence in January. 24. 1% of hemorrhoid were combined with other anorectal diseases.
8. The highest incidence of rectal cancer was in the age group of 50 to 59 years, and the average was 47.9 years. Male preponderance was noted with the ratio of 1. 62 : 1.
9. Anal fistula was most frequently observed in the age group of 20 to 29 years, and male preponderance was noted with the ratio of 2. 9 : 1. The admission rate of anal fistula was 19. 8%, and 35. 3% of the cases were found with hemorrhoids.
10. Among 1149 cases of anorectal diseases, 6 cases (0. 52%) were expired, all these cases were observed in the male babies who had imperforate anus.
